Did you know that each year a single virus causes more cases of foodborne illness than do all bacteria combined?
Many people are familiar with the stomach flu, commonly called the “24-hour bug.” However, they do not realize that this illness is not caused by bacteria, such asSalmonella or E. coli. The stomach flu is caused by a common virus known as norovirus. In the US, noroviruses causes nearly 21 million cases of stomach flu annually. They are also the leading cause of food-related gastroenteritis, responsible for over 50% of all food-related illnesses each year.
